‘Don’t Panic! The Absolute Beginner’s Guide to Agile in ‘ is intended for Systems Engineers, particularly those designing and supporting bespoke systems incorporating physical solutions, who are not well-versed in Agile, but are voluntarily considering, being cajoled into, or even involuntarily forced into, using Agile methodologies. The book is not intended to be an academic textbook (although everything in it is based on fact and best practice) but provides some high-level advice on what Agile techniques to embrace, those to avoid, and why MBSE is a critical enabler for Agile Systems Engineering. It also re-imagines the principles behind the Agile Manifesto for use on complex cyber-physical systems.
The book is published by IfSE – The Institute for Systems Engineering and was officially launched in November 2024 at their Annual Systems Engineering Conference.

‘Don’t Panic! The Absolute Beginner’s Guide to Agile in Systems Engineering’ is written by Associate Scarecrow Stuart Jobbins. This book is a primer on the use of Agile techniques in Systems Engineering. With this in mind, the book is intended to enable the reader:
- To understand what Agile means in the context of Systems Engineering and why it is inconsistent with documented software texts
- To identify where and when an Agile approach fits in engineering of systems
- To comprehend why, for significant use of Agile in your engineering (processes) during development, MBSE is a critical enabler
- To understand the limitations of using an Agile Systems Engineering approach to the development of complex, Physical Systems, and why
Business expectations typically see Agile as a mechanism to speed up, or reduce costs of, a System development, but have little understanding of the implications of such an approach. It is hoped that this book will give you a jump-off point to more expansive texts on Agile in Systems Engineering, and also some clues on how to interpret the context in which they are written, along with some reasoned argument as to where Agile approaches are applicable and the likely implications.
